WHO IS THE SKÅNE CELLO ASSOCIATION?
Since the organization is brand new, here is a brief introduction of myself.
I am originally from Canada, but have lived in Falsterbo and played cello at Malmö Opera for 30 years. I have also taught cello at all levels for 45 years, and now have the joy of seeing some of my students play professionally – including the principal cellist at Malmö Opera.
I love the connection that music creates between people of different backgrounds, languages and, not least, ages. We all speak music! And I love the sound that arises when a large number of cellists play together, a so-called cello orchestra or cello choir.
Inspired by the Manchester Cello Festival, which I attended during my student years in England, I have dreamed for many years of recreating this joyful, non-competitive and generous energy. When I saw an advertisement that Vellinge Municipality was looking for summer activities for young people, that was the spark I needed to get started.
I have been pleasantly surprised by how enthusiastic everyone I have spoken to about this project has been. I have met nothing but encouragement from all sides – from Artisten, the Kulturskolan where the festival will be held, to my colleagues in Malmö and Copenhagen who without hesitation offered their time, and all the teachers at the various music schools I have been in contact with.
A Cello Festival is not unusual in itself – people travel all over the world to participate in cello festivals. During the autumn, cello festivals were held in Estonia, Finland, the USA, Holland, and Germany, all lasting from a few days to over a week. But as far as I know, none have been held in Sweden yet. With its strategic location in Skåne, I hope that this festival will not only take place this summer but also grow every year!
